Pinewood Derby Fast Tracks Memories

Cub Scouts get revved up at Pinewood Derby in Evanston

The Pinewood Derby is an awesome Scouting experience.  The Scouts get to build and decorate their own cars and race them.  Parents are allowed to help, but the Scout should do the majority of the designing and construction themselves.

Pack 901 participates in two Pinewood Derbys: Pack 901's Derby which takes place once a year at Lincoln Elementary School and Potowatomi District Pinewood Derby which takes place once a year at Golf Mill Mall.

Your Scout can make the car as simple or complicated as he likes, within the rules listed below.  He can do all the design work himself, or purchase supplies to design his car.  You can purchase accessories for the cars at Tom Thumb in downtown Evanston, the Scout Store in Highland Park, and Michael's Craft Stores.  There are various decals and paint supplies available as well as graphite powder and silicone.

Our Pinewood Derby is assisted by Chuck Pint and Boy Scouts with Troop 3.  He brings their track and computer system.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

Golf Mill Shipping Center

239 Golf Mill Center, Niles - Center Court – Between Food Court & Theater

This event is for ALL Potawatomi Cub Scouts!

Scouts do not have to have won in their Pack’s race to participate. Did the Scout miss his Pack’s Pinewood Derby?  Did his Pack not have one?  All are invited to join us at our yearly Pinewood Derby race at Golf Mill Shopping Center!  Tigers, Wolves, Bears, & Webelos race against Scouts in their age group from around the District  for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place trophies, and for a spot in the District Championship race!

Don’t wait another year to race again!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Each Pack should provide a volunteer.  Older Scouts – Boy Scouts, Venturers, etc. can help as well! We need people to help with check-in, the tune-up station, load cars, assist with the craft table, and more.

COST:  $6 per Scout, to be paid to Jill at time of reservation.

CHECK-IN:  Bring your car between 10:00–11:30 AM for all racers.  NO CHECK-IN will be allowed after 11:30am.  Once the car is checked-in, it is no longer available to the Scout and is handled by race officials only.  If you can't come during the registration time, you can send your car with Chris & Jill.  Cars must e given to them by Friday afternoon.

REGISTRATION: Register with Jill.   Registration deadline is April 10th.

TIME:  There will be 5 races.  Every attempt will be made to start races at the times indicated below, but it is difficult to predict when one race will end and the next begin.  If you have to leave early, Chris & Jill will bring your car back.

2014 Pack 901 Race Information

Our 2014 Pinewood Derby is over!
Please join us next year!

Adults and siblings can also race!

Pinewood Derby Car Kits will be handed out to all Pack 901 Cub Scouts at the January Pack Meeting.  If you intend on purchasing an advanced kit elsewhere, please let us know so we do not supply you with a car, and save the Pack's money.  Additional kits for siblings and adults are $3.99 each.

Important Rules:

1.  Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.

2.  Length shall not exceed 7 inches.

3.  Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.

4.  Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit.

5.  Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.

6.  No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone.

7.  The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.

8.  The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.

Procedure
Our Scout's cars are weighed, checked for dangers, numbered, and entered into the system and then handed over to race officials.  Each car is raced multiple times. The computer logs the times that each car crosses the finish line for each race.  The race times are averaged at the conclusion of the race. The fastest car in each division is the winner. Once the car is checked-in, it is handled by race officials only.  All adjustments must be made before the check-in process is complete.

Cars must be checked in by 6:45pm on the day of the race.  If you cannot make to the race by that time, you will need to turn in your car ahead of time.

We will give out the following awards:

Trophies

Fastest Car - as calculated by computer for Wolves
Fastest Car - as calculated by computer for Bears
